Only in this way can we develop solutions to make them more successful in their work. Second is our corporate culture. We value and leverage the diverse strengths of our global team. We learn from each other and progress together. Because we all share the same goal: We want to make our products better each and every day - for all who keep the world moving.
Innovation leadership and sustainability
We are working to bring important new technologies such as electric, automated and connected driving into volume production, across our brands, divisions and regions.
We are clearly committed to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and thus to the decarbonization of our industry. Local CO2-neutral transport is our ultimate goal: In concrete terms, new commercial vehicles in operation in the triad markets of Europe, Japan and NAFTA are to be CO2-neutral by 2039 ("tank-to-wheel").
As truly CO2-neutral transport only works with purely electric drives, we will rely on batteries and the fuel cell for energy storage. Both technologies complement each other very well. In addition, all European Daimler Trucks plants will be CO2-neutral by 2022, all other plants will follow.
Zero is also our goal when it comes to safety. Our vision is accident-free driving, and we are getting closer to it step-by-step with a large number of active assistance systems. For the same reason, we push the development of automated driving.
Global market presence
With our BharatBenz, Freightliner, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses, Mercedes-Benz and FUSO brands, we hold leading market positions around the globe. We are constantly expanding our market presence. For example, from our Chennai plant in India we are now exporting trucks to more than 50 markets worldwide. We sell the current Mercedes-Benz Arocs and Actros models in more than 55 markets in the Middle East and Africa.
We are successful around the world because we offer commercial vehicles that can handle demanding routes in Brazil or India just as reliably as the endless highways in the U.S., the narrow streets in Japan or the congested highways in Europe. To achieve this we follow a simple maxim: We listen carefully to what our customers need where they are. And then we develop products that combine both global technology leadership and local customization.
Whether it’s the powertrain, chassis, electrical/electronic architecture or driver’s cab, global components are an important success factor for our customers and a real competitive advantage for us. With global components we achieve economies of scale and can quickly offer our customers new technologies worldwide. Our active safety assistance systems prove to be another great example: due to our platform strategy, innovative solutions like Active Brake Assist or Active Drive Assist are available in heavy-duty trucks of our brands Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Freightliner and Fuso. Of course, we continue this kind of cooperation in the future fields of electric and automated driving. Our global expertise in these areas has been bundled in two units specifically founded to advance them, namely our Electric Mobility Group and Autonomous Technology Group. Once developed, we can then integrate these respective technologies and components into all our brands worldwide. That makes us even faster, our products even better and our customers even more successful.
