Buses have been an indispensable part of societies worldwide for more than a century. We believe their importance will only continue to increase for three reasons: First, the major technology trends of electric, connected and automated driving. Second, the increasing urbanization of our society. And, third, the growing interest of people in sustainable mobility. At Daimler Buses we want to take full advantage of this potential and provide our customers with the most complete offerings in the industry: the best vehicles and the best packages of service, advice and mobility solutions. To do so we focus on "three plus one" strategic action areas.
Global market presence
We are market leaders in our traditional core markets, in some over several decades. We aim to continue to grow or gain market share there in the future. We’ll achieve this by further expanding our product portfolio, as is currently the case with our new generation of minibus. At the same time we want to grow in new markets, particularly in North Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and India. To do so we offer products that are tailored to the needs of local customers. One example of this is our BharatBenz buses for the Indian market. Our global production network and our regional centers, which are located in close proximity to our customers, are helping us to deepen our roots in all key regions in the future.
Technology leadership and sustainability
As a trailblazer in the bus industry we traditionally stand for the safety, economy and comfort of city buses and coaches. Buses also play an important role in reducing the high traffic load and road-related emissions in cities worldwide, as well as in overland traffic. We offer the right buses for every application scenario, from diesel to gas to electric drive.
Sustainability is thus a central component of our technology strategy. For our industry, we have repeatedly set the standards here, most recently in terms of safety with our Turn Assist and Active Brake Assist. We will advance electric and networked driving for our customers with equal determination. That’s how electric drive will become a standard component of our drive mix for short- and medium-haul routes. It complements our highly efficient and clean Euro VI diesel engines, as well as our buses with natural gas and hybrid drive. We’re also making it easier for our customers to switch to electric fleets. This includes consulting on the configuration of e-fleets and charging stations, as well as the IT networking of electric buses to operations management and much more. In doing so, we are contributing to sustainable public transport and to improving the quality of life in cities.
As far as networked driving is concerned, we are certain that by combining this with the intelligent evaluation of real-time data, we will create great added value for all. We are working in this direction with our OMNIplus On brand. It includes services such as OMNIplus Uptime, which enables fleet operators to avoid breakdowns and optimize repair facility visits. Our app OMNIplus On drive supports the bus driver in scheduling control and in accident reporting. We also are developing helpful services for dispatchers and repair facilities.
A healthy business model is a prerequisite for the optimal implementation of our strategy. Therefore we’re bundling our development and production expertise: For example, our competence center for city buses and the series production of electric vehicles is located in Mannheim, Germany. In order to realize economies of scale, we will also strengthen the interaction of our worldwide Daimler Buses production network and our cooperation with Daimler colleagues beyond the bus sector. In addition, we continuously implement measures to increase our efficiency and flexibility.
Strategic cooperation with partners
There are many good reasons for partnerships: With the right partners we gain additional know-how in new technologies and services. And with them we can tailor our products as closely as possible to the needs of new markets and customers, quickly and intensively test innovations within the Group, and then bring them to market with economies of scale. That's why we at Daimler Buses do not hesitate to enter into cooperation whenever it makes sense.
